A pop-up blocker is a tool that prevents unwanted windows from suddenly appearing on top of the website you’re viewing.
These surprise windows—called pop-ups—usually show advertisements, ask you to sign up for newsletters, or try to get you to download something. They interrupt what you’re trying to read and can be confusing or overwhelming. Your pop-up blocker automatically stops most of them from appearing, so you can browse websites without constant interruptions.
The good news: your web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge) already has a pop-up blocker built in and turned on. You didn’t need to install anything—it’s been protecting you all along. Occasionally, you might need to see a pop-up for something legitimate, like a payment window when shopping online. When that happens, your browser will ask if you want to allow it.
Think of a pop-up blocker as a bouncer at a nightclub door. It keeps out the troublemakers (annoying ads and scams) while letting in the legitimate guests (windows you actually need).
