They\u2019re like cockroaches\u2014sneaky, persistent, and almost impossible to get rid of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I usually spot them a mile away, but recently, one almost got me. And that\u2019s saying something because I write a newsletter warning you about this stuff!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, let me walk you through my little adventure with this <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/seniortechcafe.com\/ro\/tired-of-big-tech-snooping-on-your-emails-try-protonmail-instead\/\"   title=\"email\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"258\">email<\/a>. You\u2019ll get a front-row seat, see my thought process in how I approached it and the tools \/ strategies I used to sniff out the scam and shut it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end, you\u2019ll have a few more tricks up your sleeve to help you deal with these digital pests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-email-that-made-me-pause\">The Email That Made Me Pause<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The email landed right in my Inbox, not my Spam folder, which gave it an initial air of respectability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"839\" height=\"115\" src=\"https:\/\/seniortechcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/scam-email-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2603\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seniortechcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/scam-email-2.png 839w, https:\/\/seniortechcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/scam-email-2-300x41.png 300w, https:\/\/seniortechcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/scam-email-2-768x105.png 768w, https:\/\/seniortechcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/scam-email-2-18x2.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 839px) 100vw, 839px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It referenced my business name, threw in a trademark serial number, and claimed to be from the <em>USPTO Assistance Center <\/em>(that\u2019s the US Patent and Trademark Office).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the email, the trademark I filed for my business name had been abandoned, and someone else was trying to snag it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sender, Donald from the Center\u2019s legal team, <em>graciously<\/em> offered to help me contest the claim. It didn\u2019t go anywhere, and I assumed it was long forgotten. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the mention of someone else trying to trademark my business name? That hit a nerve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019s email was just convincing enough to make me second-guess my suspicions. So, I decided to dig deeper\u2026 but did so very cautiously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, first things first. I followed Rule #1 for when you get suspicious emails: <strong>Don\u2019t click anything. Not even out of curiosity!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I took that rule a bit further. See, in the body of the email was an email address, supposedly from the sender. I could have typed the domain name from that email into my browser to see what their website looked like. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I didn&#8217;t. Why? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because if this email was a scam, visiting that website could expose my computer to a virus, malware, or other digital nasties. It&#8217;s not worth the risk!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, without visiting that website or clicking on anything in the email, how did I figure out if this was a scam? Read on to find out&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"spotting-the-red-flags\">Spotting the Red Flags<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once I put my detective hat on, the warning signs lit up like Vegas at night:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Sender\u2019s Email Address:<\/strong> It came from a Gmail account. The U.S. government using Gmail for official correspondence? Unlikely!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The \u201cReply-To\u201d Email:<\/strong> Donald&#8217;s email address at the bottom of this email listed a different address &#8211; donald@*******sistance.com &#8211; than the email address this was sent from. Which is weird. Plus, his email isn&#8217;t an official <em>.gov<\/em> email address you\u2019d expect someone from a government agency to have. BIG. RED. FLAG.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>By now, my scam radar was in full alert mode. But I wasn\u2019t done yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"enter-scamio-my-scam-detecting-sidekick\">Enter Scamio: My Scam-Detecting Sidekick<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, I turned to <a href=\"https:\/\/seniortechcafe.com\/ro\/stay-safer-with-bitdefenders-new-scamio-your-free-scam-detecting-ai-assistant\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"981\">Scamio<\/a>, a handy AI chatbot that evaluates suspicious emails, texts, and other potential scams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I copied the email text (without clicking anything) and pasted it into Scamio. You\u2019re the hero we didn\u2019t know we needed.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-final-nail-in-the-coffin\">The Final Nail in the Coffin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For fun\u2014and a little extra confirmation\u2014I checked out the sender\u2019s email domain using Whois.com. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re not familiar, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whois.com\/whois\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.whois.com\/whois\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Whois<\/a> lets you see who owns a website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not unusual for domains to be registered privately which prevents you from seeing the owner\u2019s name and contact info.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this domain wasn\u2019t registered privately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The owner? The email went straight to the trash, where it belonged!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"quick-recap-of-the-lessons-here\">Quick Recap of the Lessons Here<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, before we go, let&#8217;s review the lessons you can use to sniff out sneaky scammers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-just-because-it-lands-in-your-inbox-doesn-t-mean-it-s-safe\">\ud83d\udd12 1. <strong>Just because it lands in your Inbox doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s safe<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Scam emails are sneaky. Sometimes they skip the Spam folder and show up right in your main inbox like they were invited. Don\u2019t trust them just because they made it through the front door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-don-t-click-on-anything\">\ud83e\udde0 2. <strong>Don\u2019t click on <em>anything<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Seriously. Not the link. Not the \u201cunsubscribe.\u201d Not even \u201cDonald\u2019s helpful government website.\u201d Clicking can invite viruses, malware, or worse\u2014someone in Karachi might start managing your trademarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if there&#8217;s a website listed, don&#8217;t visit it. At least until you&#8217;re 100% sure the email is legit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-look-at-the-sender-s-email-address\">\ud83e\uddd0 3. <strong>Look at the sender\u2019s email address<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If it\u2019s a government agency, it should end in <strong>.gov<\/strong>, not some random gmail.com account. When a \u201cgovernment official\u201d uses Gmail, it\u2019s a red flag the size of California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-check-the-reply-to-address\">\ud83d\udceb 4. <strong>Check the \u201cReply-To\u201d address<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If it doesn\u2019t match the sender, or if it looks weird (like donald@notarealwebsite.com), don\u2019t reply. Scammers love hiding behind mismatched email addresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-let-tech-tools-help\">\ud83e\udd16 5. <strong>Let tech tools help!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Feed the text of the email through <em>Scamio<\/em>. It\u2019s like having a scam-sniffing bloodhound in your back pocket. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-check-the-domain-owner\">\ud83c\udf10 6. <strong>Check the domain owner<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If there is a domain name somewhere in the email, use <strong>Whois.com<\/strong>, to look up who registered a website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-moral-of-the-story\">The Moral of the Story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Scam emails are tricky little devils. They mix just enough truth with their lies to make you second-guess yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But with a little caution and a few tools\u2014like Scamio and Whois\u2014you can shut them down faster than they pop up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key? Always stay skeptical, never click links in suspicious emails, and don\u2019t let fear pressure you into acting rashly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and if it claims to be from the U.S. government but uses a Gmail address?
