Only one is real. I know this because I took it myself.
My photo was taken of an old, rusted half track vehicle (likely WWII era) on a farm in rural Illinois.
The other 3 images are AI-generated. I created them using Ideogram.ai and ChatGPT.
Which one do you think is the real image? See the answer below!
The real image of the half track vehicle is:
Image #4
Some clues that give away the AI images:
1. The Treads Tell a Story
Real (Image #4): The vehicle’s treads are slightly uneven, rusty, and imperfect. You can even see a tread has slipped off the back wheel—a detail that screams real-world wear and tear.
AIArtificial Intelligence (AI) is basically when computers get smart—really smart. Imagine if your c... More (Images #1–3): The treads are too clean and consistent. In #1, they loop unrealistically. In #2 and #3, they’re overly symmetrical and almost plastic-looking.
⛅ 2. Sky and Shadow Clues
Real: The lighting in #4 is subtle—shadows fall naturally, and the cloudy sky has depth without looking pasted on.
AI: The clouds in #1 and #3 look painted in. They’re too smooth and consistent. In #2, the shadows on the truck don’t fully match the sun angle.
🌾 3. Grass and Ground Interaction
Real: In #4, the grass interacts realistically with the tires and treads—some blades bend around the wheels, some are flattened underneath.
AI: In #1–3, the grass often floats around the vehicle or cuts off awkwardly. In #1, especially, the shadows and grass just don’t blend naturally.
🔍 4. Tiny Real-Life Flaws
Real: Look closely at #4—there’s chipped paint, subtle warping of metal, and asymmetry throughout. The tire wear, the tilt of the roofline—it’s all just right.
AI: AI-generated vehicles often look like a mash-up of different models. In #2 and #3, you’ll notice oddly shaped headlights or fenders that don’t quite follow real physics.
Half-tracks have a fascinating history. This video takes a look at how and why they were developed, how they were used and why their use suddenly declined after WWII.
