Dark patterns are sneaky design tricks websites and apps use to nudge you into doing something you didn’t mean to do… like signing up, spending more, or handing over information. The screen isn’t broken or confusing by accident. It’s built that way on purpose.
You’ve run into them. The “unsubscribe” link hidden in tiny gray text while the “Stay subscribed” button glows the size of a dinner plate. The free trial that takes two clicks to start and fourteen to cancel. The pre-checked box that quietly adds insurance to your cart.
Why should I care?
These tricks are designed to work fastest on people who are moving quickly or trust that a company wouldn’t stack the deck against them. Knowing the game is half the defense. When a screen seems to be steering you hard toward one choice, slow down and look for the quiet option… the plain little “No thanks” they’re hoping you’ll miss. If something feels engineered to rush you, it probably is.
