Which Image is Real? Cheetah Cubs

Below are 4 images.

Only one is real. I know this because I took it myself.

My photo is of 3 cheetah cubs at the St Louis Zoo. In 2017, one of the cheetahs at the zoo gave birth to a record-breaking litter of 8 cubs. I had the good fortune of visiting the zoo on the first day the cubs were on display to the public and snapped this photo.

The other 3 images are AI-generated. I created them using Ideogram.ai and ChatGPT.

Which one do you think is the real image of the cheetah cubs? See the answer below!

The real image of the cheetah cubs from the St. Louis Zoo is:

Some clues that give away the AI images:

I’ll admit this one is tricky. AI did a real good job of creating very realistic looking cheetah cubs.

However, there still are some clues to use to ID the real image:

AI often duplicates faces.

  • In #2, #3, and #4, the background cheetahs look suspiciously similar—same pose, same expression, slight rotation. This “triplet effect” is a common AI giveaway.
  • Real photo (Image #1) shows natural variety: different angles, one facing away, more organic body language.

Details in Fur and Faces

  • Real (Image #1): The fur in #1 looks more naturally layered with subtle variations in texture and lighting.
  • AI (Images #2, #3, #4): AI-generated fur can look too smooth, slightly plastic-like, or overly perfect. The eyes sometimes lack depth or reflect light unnaturally.

  1. The AI photos have the cats all looking the same direction. Something that rarely happens in real life
