Bricked

Bricked is what techies call a device that’s stopped working so completely it’s about as useful as a brick. It won’t turn on, won’t respond, just sits there like a paperweight. It usually happens when something goes wrong deep inside… a software update that fails halfway, or a botched attempt to change the phone’s inner workings.

The word paints the picture perfectly. A $1,000 phone that won’t switch on has the exact same functionality as a chunk of clay from the hardware store. You could prop open a door with either one.

Why should I care?

Two useful things to take from this. First, when your phone or tablet says “installing update, do not turn off,” take it seriously… yanking the power mid-update is a classic way to brick a device. Second, if a stranger on the phone or a pop-up ever pressures you into changing hidden settings to “fix” or “unlock” your device, that’s a fast track to a brick (and often a scam). When in doubt, leave the inner workings alone and ask someone you trust.
