Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The CPU, or Central Processing Unit, is a piece of hardware—the main physical part inside a computer that does the thinking and decision-making. Often called the “brain” of the computer, the CPU runs programs, performs calculations, and controls other parts of the computer like memory and storage.

Think of the CPU like the engine of a car. It’s a real, physical part that powers the whole system and keeps everything running smoothly. While software gives the computer instructions, the CPU is the hardware that carries them out.
