Dead internet theory is the idea that most of what’s online isn’t made by real people anymore… it’s bots, fake accounts, and AI churning out posts, comments, and images to talk to each other while the humans thin out. In its strongest form it’s a conspiracy theory (the internet isn’t literally “dead”), but it caught on because it pokes at something that feels true.
Picture a town square that used to be full of neighbors chatting. Slowly it fills with mannequins holding signs and reciting scripts. A few real folks are still there… but you find yourself wondering how many faces in the crowd are actually people.
Why should I care?
You don’t need to buy the full theory to take the useful lesson from it: a lot of what you scroll past… glowing reviews, heartwarming stories, viral photos… may be machine-made, not a real person’s honest experience. That’s the same instinct that protects you from scams and AI slop. When something online feels a little too perfect or too pushy, it’s fair to ask whether a human was ever involved at all.
