eSIM

Every cell phone has a little ID card inside that tells your phone company “this is Bob’s phone, on Bob’s plan.” For years that was a real chip, about the size of your pinky nail, tucked into a slot. An eSIM is that same ID, except it’s built into the phone as software. Nothing to insert, nothing to lose.

Think of it like a house key versus a keypad on the door. Same job, same door… one is metal in your pocket, the other is just a code you set up.

Why should I care?

Many new phones no longer have the slot at all, so when you upgrade, your phone company sets things up by scanning a code instead of mailing you a chip. It’s faster. The catch is that if your phone quits on you, you can’t pull the chip out and pop it into a spare phone… the eSIM stays put, and you’ll need your carrier to move it.
