Plug-in

A plug-in (also called an add-on or extension) is a small piece of software that you can add to a program—like a web browser or media player—to give it extra features. For example, a plug-in might block ads, play videos, or let you edit images. You can add or remove plug-ins to customize how your software works.

Think of a plug-in like an attachment for a kitchen mixer. The mixer works fine on its own, but adding an attachment—like a dough hook or grater—gives it new abilities. In the same way, plug-ins give your software extra tools to do more things.
