A Teen’s Tech Solution for Dementia Care: Garett Ho’s Lifesaving App

With dementia affecting a growing number of Americans, the need for effective caregiving tools has never been more urgent.

It’s estimated that 12.7 million people aged 65 and older in the U.S. will have this condition by 2050. Garett Ho, a high school junior with a passion for engineering and medicine, has created an innovative app to support seniors and their caregivers.

In a moving TEDx talk, Garett shares his inspiration: his beloved grandmother, or “Popo,” who recently moved into a nursing home. Witnessing the emotional and logistical challenges his family faced, he was driven to create a solution that would offer safety and reassurance for both elderly individuals and their caregivers.

Highlights of Garett’s App:

  1. Vital Monitoring: The app pairs with a wearable device to keep track of heart rate, ECG, and daily activities. Caregivers receive real-time alerts if any health indicators suggest a problem, allowing for quick intervention.
  2. Safety Alerts: By monitoring the location of the senior, the app ensures caregivers are immediately notified if their loved one wanders, preventing potentially dangerous situations.
  3. Medication Management: The app helps manage medication schedules, sending reminders for doses and alerts for low supplies. This feature is critical for preventing the health risks associated with missed or incorrect medication.
  4. Community Connection: Recognizing the detrimental effects of loneliness, the app helps seniors connect with others nearby for social interactions, whether virtual or in-person. This fosters a sense of community and combats isolation.

Garett’s app isn’t just about monitoring; it’s about enhancing the quality of life for seniors and easing the burden on caregivers. It aims to create a safer, more connected environment for those living with dementia, helping them maintain their dignity and independence.

Future Plans:

Garett envisions expanding the app’s capabilities to include advanced fall detection, integration with home safety devices, and more robust communication features between caregivers and seniors. These enhancements will further improve safety and ease the caregiving process.

By combining compassion with technological innovation, Garett’s app offers a lifeline to families navigating the complexities of dementia care. His work is a testament to how young minds can make a profound difference, bringing comfort and security to those who need it most.
