Fast forward to now, where discovering your family roots involves swabbing your cheek, clicking a few buttons, and trusting a massive tech company to handle the most personal thing about you—your DNA. What could possibly go wrong?
Well, as we’ve seen with recent headlines about major testing companies facing bankruptcy and data breaches, treating your genetic code like a social media profile has some major strings attached. If a company that tracks your shoe size or favorite casserole recipes gets hacked, it’s a minor annoyance. But your genetic blueprint is the literal instruction manual for how your body works. It’s not just sensitive—it’s permanent.

Here is the most important thing to understand about sending your DNA to a laboratory: your DNA isn’t just yours. As a senior, you are the root of the family tree. When you share your genetic code with a database, you are also sharing 50% of your children’s DNA and 25% of your grandchildren’s DNA.
Think of it like giving out the combination to a family vault. You might be perfectly fine with strangers knowing what’s inside, but the rest of the family didn’t necessarily agree to leave the door unlocked.
